People from every background and stage of adult life seek psychiatric care. There is no single type of person who sees a psychiatrist. A consultation may be helpful whenever changes in mood, anxiety, attention, sleep, behavior, or day to day functioning are affecting well being, relationships, work, or quality of life.
A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation considers current symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, prior treatment, life circumstances, and personal goals. Recommendations may include medication, psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, additional evaluation, or coordination with other clinicians.
-
An evaluation may be worth considering when difficult days are becoming more frequent, you no longer feel like yourself, symptoms are interfering with daily life, or a major transition, loss, medical concern, or ongoing stress has become difficult to manage. Some patients also seek care after a recommendation from another physician or mental health professional.
You do not need to wait until symptoms become severe. The right time is often when you feel ready to better understand what is happening and discuss your options.
If you are thinking about harming yourself or someone else, have made a plan, or believe there may be immediate danger, do not wait for a routine appointment. Call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency department.

Board eligible generally means that a physician has completed the required specialty training and meets the criteria to pursue board certification but has not yet earned certification.
